ICONIC SCARBOROUGH – AMENDED DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION OUT FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
Since the Board of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority’s (‘MRA’) decision in December 2017 to refuse the previous Development Application for Iconic Scarborough project, Rowe Group has been working tirelessly with the Project Team to prepare a revised development solution for the site. We are now pleased to announce that the Amended Development Application for the Iconic Scarborough project has been lodged with the MRA, as of Friday 16 March 2018.
The overall design has undergone a significant design evolution process in consultation with a Design Review Group led by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage which included four (4) independent architects, including the State Government Architect of New South Wales. The evolved design is considered to be more reflective of the Scarborough locality (through the building’s revised form, colours and materials) and provides for a more softened built form which improves the visual slenderness of the development. The revised proposal is also considered to exceed the test of exemplary architectural design and delivers an even higher level of public benefit from that of the previous design.
The podium level and “public spaces” of the proposed development have also undergone significant changes, with the revised design providing for a central public plaza to create a sense of arrival within the development and represent a more human scale. The revised development also includes a number of new commercial uses, including a WA Market Hall which is comprise and showcase the best of Western Australia’s food and produce offerings (similar to the recently opened Market Hall at Yagan Square) which will focus on curated food and beverage offerings to provide an immersive Western Australian gourmet experience.
A WA Coastal Experience Centre has also been introduced into the development which will focus on the “coastal” experience Western Australia has to offer, including a tourism shop and north facing courtyard which will be creatively landscaped to replicate a regional Western Australian experience.
